The City of Dickson Parks & Recreation is expanding its adaptive recreation offerings with two new opportunities designed to help more members of our community participate, connect and share their talents.

Registration is now open for Adaptive Flag Football, offered in partnership with the Dickson Dolphins, and the department is recruiting vendors for the first Amazingly Abled Artisan Fair. Although one event takes place on the football field and the other centers on creativity, both share the same purpose: creating welcoming spaces where people can participate according to their abilities, interests and goals.

Adaptive Flag Football Brings More Athletes Into the Game

Adaptive Flag Football will provide athletes with an encouraging environment in which they can learn football skills, become more physically active and experience the excitement of being part of a team.

Practices will begin in September 2026, followed by games in October 2026. Exact practice and game dates and times will be shared with registered participants as the season schedule is finalized.

Dickson Parks & Recreation is partnering with the Dickson Dolphins to offer the program. Participants will be divided into two age and skill tiers, allowing activities, instruction and competition to be better matched to each athlete’s abilities and level of support.

           Why Adaptive Sports Matter

Adaptive recreation is not a service needed by only a small number of families. More than one in four adults in the United States—approximately 70 million people—report having a disability involving mobility, cognition, hearing, vision, self-care or independent living.

People with disabilities can also face additional barriers to physical activity, including limited program options, transportation, cost, inaccessible facilities and a lack of trained support. CDC research has found that nearly half of adults with disabilities receive no aerobic physical activity, even though most can participate when appropriate opportunities and support are available.

Inclusive sports can provide benefits that reach far beyond physical fitness. Research summarized by Special Olympics has associated inclusive sports participation with improved social competence, stronger social inclusion, new friendships and fewer problem behaviors.

For families, a local adaptive program can also mean participating close to home instead of traveling to another county or larger city to find an appropriate opportunity.

“Every person deserves the opportunity to be active, develop their talents and feel like they belong in their own community,” said Nikki Holland, Program Coordinator for Dickson Parks & Recreation. “Adaptive programming is not about asking participants to fit into a program that was not designed for them. It is about listening to individuals and families, providing the support they need and creating opportunities where they can succeed. These programs also give the entire community a chance to see the abilities, creativity and potential that have always been here.”

Amazingly Abled Artisan Fair Celebrates Creativity

Adaptive programming is about more than athletics. Recreation also includes creativity, self-expression, social connection and opportunities to contribute to community life.

More Than an Arts and Crafts Show

The Artisan Fair is intended to give participating makers more than a place to display their work. It gives them an opportunity to be recognized as artists, business owners and contributing members of the community.

Creative events can help participants practice communication, money management, customer service and self-advocacy. They can also create pathways toward greater confidence, entrepreneurship and community involvement.

For visitors, the fair offers an opportunity to purchase locally made items while learning more about the people who created them. Rather than focusing on limitations or diagnoses, the event will place attention where it belongs—on each artisan’s talent, ideas and accomplishments.

Building a More Inclusive Recreation System

Adaptive Flag Football and the Amazingly Abled Artisan Fair represent the beginning of a broader expansion of adaptive recreation in Dickson.

The department’s goal is not to create one isolated event each year. It is to gradually develop a range of accessible opportunities that reflect different ages, abilities and interests. That may include additional sports, arts programs, social activities, camps, special events and partnerships with community organizations.

Expansion will require feedback and involvement from participants, caregivers, volunteers, coaches, local businesses and community partners. Families are encouraged to share what kinds of programs are needed, what barriers currently prevent participation and what accommodations would make future events more accessible.

Community members can support these efforts by registering a participant, becoming a volunteer, attending the Artisan Fair, purchasing from participating makers, sharing event information or helping sponsor equipment and program supplies.

When recreation becomes more inclusive, the result is not simply a larger program calendar. It is a stronger community in which more people have opportunities to play, create, contribute and belong.

At Dickson Parks & Recreation, we believe everyone deserves the chance to play, compete, and be part of something bigger. Since late 2025, we’ve been working behind the scenes to thoughtfully plan and build something new for our community—Adaptive Recreation.

This new program is designed to create meaningful opportunities for individuals of all abilities to participate in organized sports and recreational activities in a way that meets them where they are. It’s about more than just play—it’s about confidence, connection, and community.

This program will be structured with two levels of play:

A support-based division for athletes who benefit from additional assistance and guidance

A more competitive division for athletes ready for a faster-paced, independent experience

By offering these two options, we can better serve a wide range of participants while ensuring every athlete has the opportunity to succeed, grow, and enjoy the game.

           A True Game Day Experience

This won’t be just another practice-based program. Our goal is to deliver a true game day atmosphere—one that players and families can look forward to each week.

The season will begin with a couple of short practices to help athletes and families get familiar with the game, the format, and expectations. From there, we transition into game play, complete with the energy, excitement, and structure that make sports so special.

Whether it’s stepping onto the field, hearing encouragement from the sidelines, or celebrating a big play, this program is designed to create lasting memories for everyone involved.

           Looking Ahead

Adaptive Flag Football is just the beginning. As we grow this initiative, our vision is to expand Adaptive Recreation into additional programs and activities that continue to serve our entire community.

Registration and full program details will be announced soon, with a planned launch in August 2026. We encourage families to keep an eye out for more information in the coming months.

This is an important step forward for Dickson Parks & Recreation—and we’re excited to take it together.

Food trucks wishing to sell food within City of Dickson parks must obtain a Parks permit prior to operating. The cost is $20 per day, plus a background check fee of $16 or more, depending on the provider. Food trucks must also be fully permitted through City Hall before setting up in any park location.

If your event includes vendors or requires street closures, additional approvals are required. Event organizers must first work with Planning and Zoning to secure the appropriate permits and permissions before Parks & Recreation can approve facility or park use. This step helps ensure public safety and proper coordination across departments.

Parks facilities are shared community spaces, and we ask all renters to help keep them clean, safe, and welcoming. Renters are responsible for supervising guests, following posted rules, and leaving the facility in clean condition at the end of the reserved time. Events must start and end within the scheduled reservation window to allow staff to prepare the space for other users.

Damage to facilities, failure to follow rules, or exceeding reserved times may result in loss of deposit, additional fees, or denial of future rental requests.

Summer Day Camps: How Activity Tracks Work

<img src="https://irp.cdn-website.com/fc32ce20/dms3rep/multi/pexels-photo-8033860.jpeg" alt="Summer Day Camps with City of Dickson Parks & Recreation are designed to give kids a fun, active, and well-rounded experience—while giving parents peace of mind. One of the ways we do that is through activity tracks, which allow campers to explore different interests throughout the day without being locked into a single activity all week.
This structure keeps camp engaging, flexible, and developmentally appropriate for a wide range of ages and interests.
What Are Activity Tracks?
Activity tracks are themed blocks of time built into the camp day. Rather than doing the same activity all day, campers rotate through different types of programming that may include outdoor play, creative projects, group games, enrichment activities, and structured social time.
Tracks help ensure campers stay active and engaged while allowing staff to adjust activities based on weather, group size, and camper needs.
A Sample Camp Day (For Example Only)
To help parents understand how activity tracks work, below is an example schedule for explanation purposes only. Actual camp schedules will vary by location, age group, and week.
Example Schedule (Not Final):
8:00–9:00 a.m. — Arrival, check-in, and free play
9:00–10:15 a.m. — Activity Track 1 (outdoor games or sports)
10:30–11:45 a.m. — Activity Track 2 (creative or enrichment activities)
12:00–12:45 p.m. — Lunch and supervised downtime
1:00–2:15 p.m. — Activity Track 3 (nature activities or themed programming)
2:30–3:30 p.m. — Activity Track 4 (group games or special activities)
3:30–4:00 p.m. — Wrap-up and pickup
Again, this schedule is only meant to show how activity tracks may be structured. The actual daily schedule will look different.
Camp Schedule & Supervision
Camp runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campers are supervised at all times by Parks & Recreation staff, with safety, engagement, and positive behavior being top priorities throughout the day.
Camp Pricing
Camp fees are charged per camp session, not per day. Each camp session requires its own registration and fee.
Pricing is based on residency, and discounts may be available for families registering multiple children. Specific camp dates, fees, and availability will be shared as registration opens.
Why Activity Tracks Benefit Campers
Activity tracks allow campers to experience a variety of activities while preventing fatigue or boredom. This structure supports physical activity, creativity, social skills, and teamwork—all within a predictable routine that helps kids feel comfortable and confident.
Tracks also give staff flexibility to adapt programming based on weather, special guests, field trips, or camper needs.
How to Register
To register your child for Summer Day Camp or to ask questions about pricing, schedules, or availability, please contact the Parks Office directly.
City of Dickson Parks & Recreation Office: (615) 446-1721
Staff will be happy to help guide you through the registration process and answer any questions you may have.

The City of Dickson Splash Pad is a favorite summer destination for families, and with a little planning, your visit can be safe, fun, and stress-free. Whether you’re stopping by after school, meeting friends, or spending the afternoon cooling off, we want everyone to have a great experience.

The splash pad is designed as a family-friendly water play area, and children must be actively supervised by an adult at all times. While Parks & Recreation staff are on site to monitor the area, enforce rules, and help when needed, they are not lifeguards and cannot replace parental supervision.

To help keep the splash pad clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone, we ask visitors to follow these guidelines:

Children should wear appropriate swimwear, and swim diapers are required for children who are not fully potty trained. Shoes with hard soles, bikes, scooters, skateboards, and other wheeled items are not allowed in the splash pad area. For safety reasons, running, rough play, or climbing on equipment is not permitted.

Food, drinks, and glass containers are not allowed on the splash pad surface. We encourage families to use nearby picnic tables or pavilion areas for snacks and meals. Please also remember that pets are not allowed in the splash pad area.

For everyone’s safety, children who appear ill, have open wounds, or are experiencing symptoms such as fever or diarrhea should not use the splash pad. These rules help protect all visitors and keep the water systems operating properly.

Seasonal Parks & Recreation staff are present to help keep the area clean, address concerns, and step in when safety issues arise. We appreciate visitors following staff instructions and helping us create a welcoming environment for all families.

Before heading out, be sure to check posted hours and weather conditions. On busy days, patience and courtesy go a long way in making the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Our splash pad is a shared community space, and when we all do our part, it stays fun, safe, and refreshing all summer long. We look forward to welcoming you and hope you enjoy your visit.

The City of Dickson Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting applications for seasonal employees, and these positions are a great opportunity for teens and young adults looking for meaningful, active work in a fun, community-focused environment.

Seasonal staff play an important role in keeping our parks and programs running smoothly. Employees may work at the Splash Pad, day camps, special events, and other Parks & Recreation programs throughout the season. This is a hands-on job that takes place outdoors, often around both children and adults, and requires a strong sense of responsibility and awareness.

Seasonal employees should be prepared to help keep facilities clean, assist with daily operations, and ensure the safety of park visitors when needed. Shifts may fall anytime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and employees must be able to work a minimum of 30 hours per pay period. Pay for these positions starts at $12.50 per hour.

We’re looking for individuals who are dependable, proactive, and able to think for themselves. Strong communication skills are important, as seasonal staff regularly interact with the public, coworkers, and supervisors. The ability to follow rules, stay attentive, and step in when help is needed is essential. Previous work experience is helpful but not required—this can be an excellent first job for teens or a solid seasonal role for young adults.

Above all, we’re looking for people who enjoy working with others, take pride in their work, and are willing to help create a safe, welcoming experience for everyone who uses our parks.

Applications can be submitted online or in person at the City of Dickson Parks & Recreation office, located at 213 Bruce Drive, Dickson, TN 37055. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call
